What is a YouTube thumbnail?
YouTube thumbnails are exactly what they sound like — they're pictures of your video. They appear as an image preview in YouTube search results and on individual video pages, and can sometimes get clicked on (since people tend to scan instead of read). How important is it? According to a recent study, 88% of viewers decide whether or not to watch a video based solely on its thumbnail image. But how do you create a good one? Read more below!
Do you need to use your face in your thumbnail?
This isn’t a hard and fast rule, but you do want people who are watching your video to see your face in it. You don’t have to look directly into camera, so long as you can be seen. If you feel like there’s no way for that to happen with your video, try editing it so that you can appear in it at least briefly. It only takes a few minutes and will help your thumbnails stick out from other videos on YouTube. In fact, I would advise making sure your face is visible in all of your thumbnails. It may not be an official best practice but no one wants to click on a thumbnail only find that person's arm or shoulder taking up most of it instead of their face!
What should be included in your YouTube thumbnail?
A YouTube thumbnail is one of your most valuable marketing tools when it comes to making a good first impression on viewers. While they don’t affect video rankings in any way, people are much more likely to click if they’re interested in what they see on their feed or search results page. Keep that in mind as you determine what should be included and what shouldn’t. For example, if you have several co-hosts but only want one featured, then choose them wisely: using an image with all of you might confuse new viewers and make them less likely to click through. Also think about how important it is for your thumbnail image to give away as little as possible about your video.
How can you create unique and eye-catching thumbnails?
A thumbnail is a very small version of your video, so it doesn’t take long for viewers’ eyes to gloss over. While they should never be misleading or deceptive, you want them to catch viewers’ attention long enough for them to click on your video and watch a few seconds of it. Therefore, you want something that will pique their interest as soon as they look at it. The two main things you should think about are genre and tone. You don’t want a black-and-white thumbnail if your video is an upbeat comedy. That said, you also don’t want a bright pink one if your movie is dark and terrifying.
